Sailfish, blue marlin, black marlin, striped marlin, yellowfin tuna, dorado, wahoo, snapper, rooster fish, jacks, shark…. To name a few of the fish that we catch. Sportfishing off Costa Rica is famous and justifiably so. All billfish are consistently caught year round, but January till March excel for marlin whereas June, July and August see the hottest sailfish action. Again, food fish can be caught in abundance year round, but the rainy season, (may till November), see the best catches.
Tamarindo is situated a mere 10 miles from the edge of the continental shelf, and conditions permitting the hot bite can even be half as close. Calm blue waters are typical out in front of Tamarindo April through December, meaning a very short run to the grounds. January through March can see high winds off of Tamarindo, but an hour long run towards the south and the wind backs off completely, leaving perfect conditions.
Inshore fishing………half days will predominantly be fishing the near shore area. Roosterfish haunt the shallows, and the tamarindo reef, just 4 miles offshore hosts anything and everything, from large snapper to shark, to sailfish and marlin, to tuna and dorado. Live baiting, bottom fishing, and trolling are all common practice whilst inshore.
The Billfish Armada crew has a catch and release policy on all billfish. We work together with talented taxidermists who can build a realistic and longer lasting replica of our client’s catch. With regards to food fish, we keep enough for dinner and release healthy the excess. |
